Blog #5: Introduction to Rock Music

The rock music genre originated in the United States during the mid 1950s, and has since increased in popularity throughout the world. It's style draws upon the African American genres of blues, rhythm, and country music. As a result of expansion, the genre has further split into sub-genres, such as alternative rock and heavy metal, and incorporated other musical influences e.g. jazz classical. A rock band is typically centred around the use of an electric guitar, as well as an electric bass guitar, drums and one or more singers. The members, Matthew "Matty" Healy (lead singer and guitarist) , George Daniel (Drummer), Adam Hann (lead guitarist)  and Ross MacDonald (bassist), first met each other at school in 2002. They started out covering punk songs at gigs arranged for underage youths, before drawing on the works of famous musicians- such as Michael Jackson, the Rolling Stones and Brian Eno- to formulate their own, unique sound. They released their first EP ' Facedown' in 2012, with the UK indie label Dirty Hit. Their songs were given exposure on radio stations and on various online platforms, which significantly incre...
