With their intensely meaningful lyrics and infectious guitar riffs, The 1975 never fails to make me swoon. Their songs give off 'feel good vibes'; they're the type of tunes you can blast whilst driving down the freeway late at night.
The 1975 are a British rock band from Manchester (if you can't tell already, I am obsessed with many English bands hahah). The members, Matthew "Matty" Healy (lead singer and guitarist) , George Daniel (Drummer), Adam Hann (lead guitarist) and Ross MacDonald (bassist), first met each other at school in 2002. They started out covering punk songs at gigs arranged for underage youths, before drawing on the works of famous musicians- such as Michael Jackson, the Rolling Stones and Brian Eno- to formulate their own, unique sound.
They released their first EP 'Facedown' in 2012, with the UK indie label Dirty Hit. Their songs were given exposure on radio stations and on various online platforms, which significantly increased the group's following. Upon their initial success, the band released other EPs, such as 'Sex' and 'Music for Cars'. 'Chocolate' - a single from the 'Music for Cars' EP - is known as a fan favourite, and is one of the songs that contributed to the band's rise in popularity.
In 2013, the band released their self - titled debut album, which went to number one in the UK. The album also gained popularity in America, where it reached number 28 on the Billboard 200. This album would probably have to be my favourite. It is known as the 'black and white era', due to it's monochromatic album aesthetics and music videos. This album is definitely more 'indie rock', especially with its strong guitar riffs. It is difficult for me to choose just one favourite track, but 'Chocolate', 'Settle Down', 'Heart Out' and 'Robbers' are definitely my top picks.
After a 3 year break, The 1975 returned with their second album 'I Like It When You Sleep, for You Are So Beautiful Yet So Unaware of It'. This album is more 'pop rock' and '80s inspired' in juxtaposition to their first album. It is definitely a different sound to what the band first started out with, however, I believe it was done well. Some of my favourite tracks from the album include 'The Sound', 'Somebody Else', 'She's American' and 'This Must Be My Dream'. Once again, this album helped contribute to the band's rise in popularity - especially on a global scale.
The 1975 are set to come back with a new album in 2018- which I am highly anticipating! They are definitely one of my favourite bands. I also went to their concert in Sydney last year, and it was such an experience. I shall leave some of their video clips at the end of this post.
