Tame Impala

Tame Impala is psychedelic rock project founded by Kevin Parker in 2007. Unlike other rock bands who record together, Parker writes, records, mixes and produces the music. The band with Kevin Parker on guitar/vocals, Jay Watson on synthesiser/vocals/guitar, Dominic Simper on guitar/syntehsiser, Cam Avery on bass/vocals and Julien Barbagallo on drums/vocals is live touring act, rising to prominence in 2010 after a series of EPs, their first album Innerspeaker. In their live performances, their set has vivid colours and bizarre patterns which complements their psychedelic influences.

The style of music is influenced by 1960s to early 1970s psychedelic rock. The sound is often experimented by Parker using phasing, delay, reverb, fuzz and also pedals which results in unique sounds being created. Unlike other bands who record together, Parker records the music himself

which he states"the one person constructing an awesome symphony of sound"." Parker also has influences from melodies and electronic music with an emphasis on lo-fi music. Parker emphasises the need to make the sound first then composing the meaningful lyrics complementing the music.

Blog #5: Introduction to Rock Music

The rock music genre originated in the United States during the mid 1950s, and has since increased in popularity throughout the world. It's style draws upon the African American genres of blues, rhythm, and country music. As a result of expansion, the genre has further split into sub-genres, such as alternative rock and heavy metal, and incorporated other musical influences e.g. jazz classical. A rock band is typically centred around the use of an electric guitar, as well as an electric bass guitar, drums and one or more singers. Over the years, the rock genre has been used as a platform for artists and audiences to voice their opinions on the social and political issues of the time. This is encapsulated in the lyrics.  Themes of love and hardship also make popular themes for songs. The first rock 'n' roll record to achieve national popularity was "Rock Around the Clock" made by Bill Haley and the Comets in 1955. It appealed to the younger audienc...

Blog #11: Insight into a Rock Band~ The 1975

With their intensely meaningful lyrics and infectious guitar riffs, The 1975 never fails to make me swoon. Their songs give off 'feel good vibes'; they're the type of tunes you can blast whilst driving down the freeway late at night. The 1975 are a British rock band from Manchester (if you can't tell already, I am obsessed with many English bands hahah). The members, Matthew "Matty" Healy (lead singer and guitarist) , George Daniel (Drummer), Adam Hann (lead guitarist)  and Ross MacDonald (bassist), first met each other at school in 2002. They started out covering punk songs at gigs arranged for underage youths, before drawing on the works of famous musicians- such as Michael Jackson, the Rolling Stones and Brian Eno- to formulate their own, unique sound. They released their first EP ' Facedown' in 2012, with the UK indie label Dirty Hit. Their songs were given exposure on radio stations and on various online platforms, which significantly incre...
