Blog #7: Introduction to KPOP

What is KPOP?

Kpop is a musical genre consisting of electronic, hip hop, rock, and R&B music originating in South Korea. In recent years the genre has grown into a popular subculture among the younger generation of Asia, and thanks to the internet Kpop has spread outside of Asia reaching other westernised countries.

Why people listen?

Since the genre has spread to westernised countries that more or less don't speak the Korean language, why do they listen to it? Well you don't necessarily have to speak the language to enjoy the music. That's what music is about, enjoying the sounds of the melody and musical talents those that produce it. Although, if you're still wandering why foreigners still listen indulge in Kpop, there are dedicated Kpop fans that actively translate the lyrics into English and other languages. As well as that, Kpop is heavily influenced by western pop music, so there's some common ground in terms of the flavour of the music.

Another reason could be just because of the performances. Kpop is characterised by (over)use of visual elements. Not only does the vocal and producing abilities of these idols have to be top notch but they must be the whole package in order to be classed as a successful Kpop group or idol in this industry. The element of choreography really depends on an idol's energy and efforts but can add excitement, uniqueness and flare, enhancing the appeal of the production. Performances where the members of a Kpop team are all dancing together, on beat and with no mistakes are the best kind. On a side note, the French Audiovisual Organisation Institut national de l'audiovisuel defines Kpop as 'a fusion of synthesised music, sharp dance routines, and fashionable, colourful outfits combining bubble pop with musical elements of electro , disco, rock, R&B and hip hop.

Blog #5: Introduction to Rock Music

The rock music genre originated in the United States during the mid 1950s, and has since increased in popularity throughout the world. It's style draws upon the African American genres of blues, rhythm, and country music. As a result of expansion, the genre has further split into sub-genres, such as alternative rock and heavy metal, and incorporated other musical influences e.g. jazz classical. A rock band is typically centred around the use of an electric guitar, as well as an electric bass guitar, drums and one or more singers. Over the years, the rock genre has been used as a platform for artists and audiences to voice their opinions on the social and political issues of the time. This is encapsulated in the lyrics.  Themes of love and hardship also make popular themes for songs. The first rock 'n' roll record to achieve national popularity was "Rock Around the Clock" made by Bill Haley and the Comets in 1955. It appealed to the younger audienc...

Blog #11: Insight into a Rock Band~ The 1975

With their intensely meaningful lyrics and infectious guitar riffs, The 1975 never fails to make me swoon. Their songs give off 'feel good vibes'; they're the type of tunes you can blast whilst driving down the freeway late at night. The 1975 are a British rock band from Manchester (if you can't tell already, I am obsessed with many English bands hahah). The members, Matthew "Matty" Healy (lead singer and guitarist) , George Daniel (Drummer), Adam Hann (lead guitarist)  and Ross MacDonald (bassist), first met each other at school in 2002. They started out covering punk songs at gigs arranged for underage youths, before drawing on the works of famous musicians- such as Michael Jackson, the Rolling Stones and Brian Eno- to formulate their own, unique sound. They released their first EP ' Facedown' in 2012, with the UK indie label Dirty Hit. Their songs were given exposure on radio stations and on various online platforms, which significantly incre...
