Blog #22: Kpop Group - BIGBANG

BIGBANG

No, not the Big Bang Theory but a South Korean idol group formed under YG Entertainment, called BIGBANG that consist of 5 members:
  • G-Dragon (Kwon Ji Yong)
    • Leader, Main Rapper, Vocalist and Face of the Group

  • T.O.P (Choi Seung-hyun)
    • Lead Rapper, Vocalist and Visual

  • Taeyang (Dong Yong Bae)
    • Main Vocalist and Main Dancer

  • Daesung (Kang Daesung)
    • Lead Vocalist

  • Seungri (Lee Seung Hyun)
    • Lead Dancer, Vocalist and Maknae (Youngest in the group)

A group that has gained the honorific title "Kings of Kpop", as they are often cited to be one of the most influential acts to shape the Kpop industry, helping spread the Korean Wave internationally. Since their debut back 2006, they have topped major Korean music charts and 11 years down the track still produce hit tracks.

Their experimental and diverse use of music genres, personal involvement in producing their own records, and stage performances have been admired by music critics and served as influence to several Kpop and international artists.

Although, they bristle at the label "Kpop."

"Actually, I don't know why they call Korean music 'Kpop,'" Seungri said. "Good music is good music, so if you are going to be doing good music, then they are going to be listening to our music."

G-Dragon chimed in. "We are Korean, so obviously they call our music Kpop. But we never though of our music as Kpop. Our music is just our music."

"It's like this," added T.O.P. "You don't divide pop music by who's doing it. We don't say, for instance, 'white pop' when white people make music."

Blog #7: Introduction to KPOP

What is KPOP? Kpop is a musical genre consisting of electronic, hip hop, rock, and R&B music originating in South Korea. In recent years the genre has grown into a popular subculture among the younger generation of Asia, and thanks to the internet Kpop has spread outside of Asia reaching other westernised countries.  Why people listen? Since the genre has spread to westernised countries that more or less don't speak the Korean language, why do they listen to it? Well you don't necessarily have to speak the language to enjoy the music. That's what music is about, enjoying the sounds of the melody and musical talents those that produce it. Although, if you're still wandering why foreigners still listen indulge in Kpop, there are dedicated Kpop fans that actively translate the lyrics into English and other languages. As well as that, Kpop is heavily influenced by western pop music, so there's some common ground in terms of the flavour of the musi...

Blog #11: Insight into a Rock Band~ The 1975

With their intensely meaningful lyrics and infectious guitar riffs, The 1975 never fails to make me swoon. Their songs give off 'feel good vibes'; they're the type of tunes you can blast whilst driving down the freeway late at night. The 1975 are a British rock band from Manchester (if you can't tell already, I am obsessed with many English bands hahah). The members, Matthew "Matty" Healy (lead singer and guitarist) , George Daniel (Drummer), Adam Hann (lead guitarist)  and Ross MacDonald (bassist), first met each other at school in 2002. They started out covering punk songs at gigs arranged for underage youths, before drawing on the works of famous musicians- such as Michael Jackson, the Rolling Stones and Brian Eno- to formulate their own, unique sound. They released their first EP ' Facedown' in 2012, with the UK indie label Dirty Hit. Their songs were given exposure on radio stations and on various online platforms, which significantly incre...
