Blog #8: Insight into a Rock Band ~ Coldplay

When it comes to music, I will listen to anything depending on my mood. However, one of my all time favourite bands is British Rock group Coldplay.
Their tremendous success on a global scale attributes not only to their musical talent, but also to their kind hearted personalities.

Coldplay's journey began back in 1996, when Chris Martin (lead singer/ piano) , Johnny Buckland (guitar), Will Champion (drums) and Guy Berryman (bass guitar)  met at the University College of London. They released their first three EPs: 'Safety',  'Brothers and Sisters' and 'The Blue Room', which awarded them a deal with the UK company Parlophone Records in April 1999.

In July 2000, their debut album- Parachutes- was released and became an immediate success across the UK. This significantly led to the album being released in the US, which was also successful.  'Yellow' was one of the most popular tracks from the album and remains a favourite for many Coldplay fans to this day.

In August 2002, Coldplay released their second studio album 'A Rush of Blood to the Head'. It contained hits such as 'the Scientist', 'Clocks' and 'In My Place', which also won Grammy Awards. 'A Rush of Blood to the Head' would probably have to be my favourite album by Coldplay, because of the thought provoking lyrics and infectious melodies. Overall, the songs connect really well with me and never fail to trigger emotions.

Coldplay's highly anticipated third album - X&Y- was released in June 2005, and instantly topped charts around the world. It sold more than 8 million copies just in it's first year. Songs such as 'Speed of Sound' and 'Fix You' are two famous songs from the album and I think it's safe to say that they are favourites with the audience.

Viva la Vida-- also known as 'Viva la Vida or death and All His Friends', was released in June 2008. Worldwide sales for the album approached 6 million by November, and again, awarded the band with ultimate success. Songs such as 'Viva La Vida' is a song enjoyed by thousands, and never fails to get the crowd singing and off their feet at concerts.

Coldplay's 5th studio album Mylo Xyloto was released in 2011, and portrayed a very different sound. It included hits such as 'Every Tear Drop is a Waterfall' and 'Paradise'.

Ghost Stories was released in 2014, and once again portrayed a different sound. Various producers, including Avicii and Timbaland, were brought in, making the resulting Ghost Stories quite different from its predecessors in that there were many producers instead of a handful.

Coldplay's most recent album 'A Head Full of Dreams' was released in December 2015, and included many collaborations with artists e.g. Beyonce, Tove Lo and Noel Gallagher. It contained songs such as "Adventure of a Lifetime", "Hymn for the Weekend" and "Everglow". The album remained in the charts for majority of 2016.

Coldplay would have to be one of the most popular and influential rock bands of the 21st century. Their ability to connect with the audience's emotions in their songs, is something that is considerably hard to find nowadays. They have been a favourite of mine for an extremely long time, and I personally believe they are some of the most talented musicians.  I shall leave you with some of their most famous songs.

Blog #5: Introduction to Rock Music

The rock music genre originated in the United States during the mid 1950s, and has since increased in popularity throughout the world. It's style draws upon the African American genres of blues, rhythm, and country music. As a result of expansion, the genre has further split into sub-genres, such as alternative rock and heavy metal, and incorporated other musical influences e.g. jazz classical. A rock band is typically centred around the use of an electric guitar, as well as an electric bass guitar, drums and one or more singers. Over the years, the rock genre has been used as a platform for artists and audiences to voice their opinions on the social and political issues of the time. This is encapsulated in the lyrics.  Themes of love and hardship also make popular themes for songs. The first rock 'n' roll record to achieve national popularity was "Rock Around the Clock" made by Bill Haley and the Comets in 1955. It appealed to the younger audienc...

Blog #19: Soundtrack in Baby Driver

Soundtrack in Baby Driver  Baby Driver was released on 28 June 2017, the plot of the movie follows Baby a getaway driver working for a crime boss. The sequences of the movie follows Baby and most of the soundtrack is diagetic score meaning what the characters in the movie listen to, in this case it is the protagonist, Baby. Edgar Wright, the director cites it as a musical with a mix of crime, action, music and sound. The soundtrack in Baby Driver follows Baby's mood as what he experiences such as suspense, love and sadness.  The film is well known for its feature in choreography with the soundtrack, the actors' timing and movements are synced with the soundtrack as synonymous with the "opening scene" and the "second scene."
